Banyan is an art rock band with heavy jazz and punk influences from Los Angeles , California .

Bandleader and co-founder Stephen Perkins previously drummed for Jane's Addiction (1986-1991) and later for Porno for Pyros . The second founding member was David Turin . Other key members include guitarist Nels Cline , trumpeter Willie Waldman and bassist Mike Watt . Mike Watt and Nels Cline usually only play concerts on the west coast and are replaced by Rob Wasserman (bass) and Clint Wagner (guitar) if necessary . At some concerts, the band was expanded to include saxophonists Steve Mackay , Herman Green and guitarist Calvin Newborn .

The Los Angeles artist Norton Wisdom paints during the concerts and interprets the music in a way that lyrics could otherwise. Some graphic and musical elements are picked up again and again, while another large part is purely improvised.

On the first EP appeared Money Mark as Freeway Keyboardist with. The first album was recorded in the Dust Brothers studios and produced by Turin and Perkins.

On the second album Anytime at All, among others, Flea , John Frusciante (both members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers ), Martyn LeNoble (ex- Porno for Pyros ), Rob Wasserman and Buckethead took part.

The third album Live At Perkins' Palace (named after the Perkins studio, not the venue) was finally recorded by the quartet Perkins, Watt, Cline and Waldman.

Steve Kimock performed on August 26, 2007 in the concert during the Riverview Music Festival in Chicago.

The band members repeatedly name Igor Stravinsky and Miles Davis as important influences, including on their homepage.
