Barbara Collier

Barbara Jean Collier (born February 27, 1940 in Stratford / Ontario ) is a Canadian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Collier completed a degree in anthropology at Trinity College, University of Toronto , which she graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1962. She also received voice and music training from Gordon D. Scott in her hometown (1956–59) and Douglas Bodle in Toronto (1960–61) and was a member of the Festival Singers of Toronto for two years . In 1960 she won the rosebowl at the Kiwanis Festival .

From 1962 to 1965 Collier took lessons from Rodolfo Mele in London, interrupted by a study visit to the Cologne University of Music and the Mozarteum (lessons from Erik Werba ). As an opera singer, she made her debut in 1965 in the role of Liu in Puccini's opera Turandot in Oberhausen. She also appeared in operas by Mozart , Ferenc Farkas and Werner Egk in Oberhausen . She completed her training with Kálmán Hetényi in Budapest and settled in Munich in 1968. She has performed in concerts and oratorios with musicians such as Astrid Varnay ,Mignon Dunn , James McCracken and Rosalind Elias .

In 1976 Collier returned to Toronto. Here she took part in television productions (including operas by Imre Kálmán ) and performed with the Canadian Opera Company a . a. in great Wagner roles (Gutrune in Götterdämmerung , 1973 and Gerhilde in Walküre , 1976) and as Sara in the world premiere of Harry Somers ' opera Louis Riel . At the Pacific Opera she sang Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail (1981) and Adina in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore (1983), at Vancouver Opera Micaela in Carmen and at Saskatoon Opera Mimì in La Bohème (1987) and the Violetta in La traviata (1989). In 1982 she recorded an album with songs by Zoltán Kodály with pianist John Coveart and bassist Janos Tessenyi .
