Mignon Dunn

Mignon Dunn (born June 17, 1928 in Memphis / Tennessee ) is an American opera singer (mezzo-soprano) and vocal teacher.

Dunn studied singing with Karen Branzell and Beverley Peck Johnson . She made her debut in 1955 with the Experimental Opera Theater of America / New Orleans Opera Association and the following year in Troilus and Cressida at the New York City Opera . In 1958 she appeared for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera , where she has participated in more than 650 performances in 35 years. She sang her most important role, the title role in Georges Bizet's Carmen , more than four hundred times in four different languages.

The opera houses at which she has guested include the Milan Scala , the Vienna State Opera , the Royal Opera House and Covent Garden Opera in London, the Paris Opera , the Bolshoi Theater , the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, the Hamburg State Opera , the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the National Opera Chile, the Opéra de Montréal , the Chicago Lyric Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Santa Fe Opera, and the Opera Theater of Detroit.

Her repertoire includes dramatic roles in Italian opera (Amneris in Aida , Azucena in Il trovatore , Eboli in Don Carlo , Laura and La Cieca in La Gioconda , Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana ) roles from French operas (Dalila in Samson et Dalila , Giulietta in Les contes d'Hoffmann , Dulcinée in Don Quichotte ) and German operas (various roles in Der Ring des Nibelungen , Ortrud in Lohengrin , Kundry in Parsifal , Venus in Tannhauser , Klytämnestra in Elektra , Herodias in Salome , Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten ).

She has also appeared in several operatic premieres, including Carlisle Floyd's Susannah (1956), Robert Ward's The Lady from Colorado (1964) and Robert Di Domenico's The Balcony . From 1990 she taught at the University of Illinois , and other teaching positions at the International Vocal Arts Institute, the University of Texas at Austin , Northwestern University , Brooklyn College and the Manhattan School of Music . She is married to the conductor Kurt Klippstatter .
