Barbara O'Neil (born July 17, 1910 in St. Louis , Missouri , † September 3, 1980 in Cos Cob , Connecticut ) was an American actress .

Life

Barbara O'Neil came from a distinguished New England family and attended Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers . She began her acting career with the Cape Cod- based University Players. She was seen on stage for the first time in the musical Summer Stock . One of the founders of the University Players was director Joshua Logan , to whom O'Neil was married from 1940 to 1942. She made her Broadway debut in the play Saint's Parade in 1930 . In 1937 she went to Hollywood, where she made her first screen appearance in Stella Dallas . She got a contract with Universal Pictures and starred in 1939, among other things in the horror film The Executioner of London . O'Neil played her best-known role in 1939 as the mother of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind , although she was only three years older than her film daughter Vivien Leigh . In the following year she received an Oscar nomination in the category Best Supporting Actress for the film Hell, where is your victory . Over a period of 35 years, she appeared in 17 films and was used occasionally in television games in the 1950s. However, her main focus was on her theater work.

She died of a heart attack in 1980 at the age of 70.
