Barbro Walker

Barbro Jorid Britta Walker (* 1968 ) is a German educator. She is a professor for childhood education at the University of Applied Education in Berlin .

Career

Walker studied education from 1988 to 1992 , teaching at primary schools and psychology in Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt . After her legal clerkship , she passed the second state examination for teaching qualifications in 1995 and obtained a diploma in educational science in 1996. In 2003 she did her doctorate phil. She worked as a research assistant at Gabriele Faust and Jörg Schlömerkemper and from 1998 to 2002 she was regional director of the German doctoral network THESIS. In parallel to her work as a teacher and mentor for trainee teachers in the school service of the state of Hesse, she was a specialist advisor for neuroscience and learning at the state school authority in Darmstadt from 2008 to 2012 . From 2010 to 2013 she was a lecturer for educational professionals at the Union for Education and Science. In 2011, Walker was delegated to the Hessian Ministry of Culture to conduct a qualification measure for teachers, social pedagogues and daycare professionals on the subject of "self-regulatory skills". From 2014 to 2017, Walker was an academic assistant and post-doctoral candidate at the Institute for Education for Children and Adolescents at the University of Koblenz-Landau , and from 2015 also lecturer at the Institute for Educational Science at the University of Education in Heidelberg . Since 2017 she has been Professor of Childhood Education at the University of Applied Education in Berlin and Head of the Childhood Education course.

Research priorities

Walker deals with the neuroscientific and pedagogical-anthropological basics of learning processes in childhood (0-10 years) as well as with the development and importance of self-regulatory skills in preschool age. Another focus of her work is learning and behavioral difficulties in preschool and elementary school age, whereby the problem of medicalization through diagnostic categories and constructs is considered. Walker also takes a critical look at learning and neuromyths in education, including esoteric and / or pseudo-scientific support approaches and therapies for children such as B. " Brain-Gym ", " KiSS " or " Indigo Children " apart. She deals with the learning and developmental psychology of childhood, with the development of social cognitions in the focus of her interest. The quality of teaching in primary schools is another focus of their work.

Functions

Walker is a member of the German Society for Educational Science (DGfE) and the German Association of Universities (DHV). She is also a member of the Scientific Council of the Society for the Scientific Investigation of Parasciences (GWUP). Until 2017 she was editor and reviewer of the journal for primary school research .
