action

When a frail old man collapses, Miss Shruti Gosh, a social worker at a school for the deaf, is notified immediately and visits him immediately. On the way to Darjeeling, she remembers her fateful encounters with him.

Calcutta 1978: Inspector Dutta travels from Darjeeling to arrest Barfi on the basis of the missing persons report she placed. She was not aware that Barfi was being wanted and that she was maneuvering him into trouble. Although she is married, she does not want to abandon him and drives to Darjeeling, where the prisoner was taken.

Darjeeling 1972: This was also the place where she met Barfi six years ago. His real name was Murphy, but due to his deafness he could only say "Barfi!" Since his mother died while giving birth, his father had to raise him alone. The fun-loving, always joking young man had been courting her from the first meeting, although she was already engaged to a wealthy man from Calcutta. Barfi's charm, joie de vivre and simplicity fascinated her, and the fact that he was deaf did not in any way affect his communication skills and affection. However, on her mother's advice, she opted for the safer option and moved to Calcutta to marry Mr. Sengupta.

Darjeeling 1978: At the police station she learns what Barfi has actually been accused of, bank robbery and kidnapping. Barfi admits that six years ago, due to his father's sudden serious illness, he needed money for his upcoming operation and was actually considering kidnapping the granddaughter of the most influential man in town, but someone had already anticipated him. He desperately wanted to rob the bank the next day, but this attempt failed miserably. While on the run, he found a delivery van in which the kidnapped girl was lying unconscious, so he took the opportunity and drove away with her. But he did not have to forcibly hold the autistic Jhilmil, because they were friends in their childhood and he quickly regained her trust. After receiving the ransom, he was able to pay the hospital bill, but his father had passed away. Then he wanted to bring her back home, but since the death of her grandfather Jhilmil didn't feel at home there any more and kept running after Barfi. He took her to her former nanny outside town, but she didn't want to stay there either. Eventually he took care of her and looked for work in Calcutta. Gradually a very great affection developed between these unequal personalities and they began to have a happy relationship. After six years he met Shruti again and invited her to his home to introduce Jhilmil to her. When they went out to dinner later, Jhilmil got jealous and ran away. This was why Mrs. Sengupta put up a missing person report.

At the police station they learn that there was a second ransom note at the time with a much higher demand, but when the ransom was handed over the car in which the hostage was sitting had an accident, since then Jhilmil has been declared dead. Since the police chief wants the case to be cleared up quickly, Inspector Dutta has to attach everything to Barfi, so the inspector asks Mrs. Sengupta to help Barfi escape. For Shruti, however, this decision meant a break with her husband. She accompanies Barfi to Calcutta and lives with him there. However, Barfi does not give up the search for Jhilmil, after a while he finds the phone number she must have dialed when she ran away, and travels to the sanatorium where Jhilmil had spent a few years. Her birth there was kept secret by her biological father, as he was behind the blackmail attempt and faked the alleged accidental death in order to get her trust assets.

Shruti has to admit that Barfi's heart has long been given to Jhilmil. She looks for a new task in life and from then on takes care of deaf children as a social worker. Barfi and Jhilmil get married, find work and accommodation in the Muskaan nursing home and live there until they die together.

criticism

“The beginning is characterized by romance and slapstick, later melodrama comes along. The film also loses some of its energy, seems a little too long and a little boring. [..] But in the end there are no gigantic shortcomings. So much works after all. The noble pictures. The convincing actors. The almost too lovely music. The historical design that looks believable, even if I don't assume that there was already cappuccino in Darjeeling in the 70s. In any case, the different epochs and the two locations Darjeeling and Calcutta guarantee a bit of scenic variety, which is good in the fight against signs of wear and tear. "
