history

Anita Ehlers on the Elbe (2014)

The origins of the company go back to 1927. The Ewerführer Heinrich Ehlers went into business for himself and began renting out barges and tarpaulins . His “couchette” - a pontoon with a wooden shed - was located at Bei den Mühren in the customs canal below the Katharinenkirche . The death of Heinrich Ehler in 1939 and the Second World War initially prevented the company from continuing operations. Only in the third generation were Günter Ehlers († 2012) and his wife Hiltrud able to build on the tradition of self-employment in the port. In 1979 they acquired the first barge and in 1982 founded a company for passenger transport and towing work under the name Barkassen-Centrale Überseebrücke Günter Ehlers e. K. The fourth generation has been at the helm in the company since the mid-1980s.

In 2000, with Anita Ehlers built in Finkenwerder for around 1 million DM, a new building was put into service for the first time. After further new acquisitions, all of the old barges - the oldest of which was launched in 1914 - had to be retrofitted with air chambers to prevent them from sinking. In 2006, the director Ulrich Patzwahl shot the 30-minute documentary Die Barkassen-Familie from Hamburg for the TV station arte , which is about the Ehlers and their family business. In the following years the documentation was repeated several times on arte and 3sat .

In 2007 Günter Ehlers donated the barge Frieda Ehlers, built in 1926 in the JW Bartram shipyard in Hamburg-Neuhof , to Hafenkultur eV - Friends of the Hamburg Harbor Museum . For several years now, she has been taking her trips through the Hansahafen on special occasions for visitors to the port museum . She also takes part in classic car regattas. The post launch Jan Ehlers , built in 1928 in the Wilhelm-Schüler-Werft on Moorreger Deich der Pinnau in the Uetersen area, was rented by the Museum of Telecommunications and between 2004 and 2009 served to distribute mail for the sailors of the ships lying in the stream at Dalben .

The head office of the Barkassen-Centrale Ehlers moved from Vorsetzen to HafenCity in 2011 .
