At the time of the United States Census 2000, Barling lived in 4176 people. The population density was 73.5 people per km ². There were 1697 housing units at an average of 29.9 per km ². The population consisted of 87.05% of White , 1.39% Black or African American , 1.87% Native American , 5.10% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 2.04% said other races to belong and 2.54% named two or more races. 3.98% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Barling were distributed to 1,599 households out of which 35.2% had children under 18 years of age. 53.3% of households were married, 12.6% had a female head of the household without a husband and 29.8% were not families. 26.5% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 10.3% of all households aged 65 years or older.
