Barney McAll (* 1966 in Melbourne ) is an Australian jazz pianist , keyboardist and composer .

Barney McAll's father was a fan of traditional jazz ; his brother introduced him to modern jazz by Bud Powell and Bill Evans . In the jazz scene of Melbourne he was active from the mid-1980s; from 1986 he played with Vince Jones ( It All Ends Up in Tears (1987) and Trustworthy Little Sweethearts , 1988). He received his Bachelor of Music from the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, where he studied with Paul Grabowsky , Tony Gould , Mike Nock and Doug Devries . In the United States, McAll worked with Vincent Herring , who inspired him to compose. In 1990 he won the AMP Jazz Piano Award at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz ; with the prize money he studied in New York. In the 1990s he worked again with Vince Jones, in the USA with the Groove Collective and with Gary Bartz , Fred Wesley , Dewey Redman and Cindy Blackman .

In 1995 his debut album Exit appeared , on which Vincent Herring and Jimmy Cobb contributed. Release the Day followed in 2001 ; In 2003 he worked on Josh Roseman's album Treats for the Nightwalker . He recorded his album Mother of Dreams and Secrets with various bands in Cuba, Australia and New York, including Liberty Ellman , Billy Harper and Kurt Rosenwinkel. McAll has also composed film music for several TV documentaries, including for the Independent Lens series . McAll performed with his band Trio Feral at the Jazzfest Berlin 2014; Deutschlandradio Kultur broadcast the recording on January 26, 2015.
