Karl Bartholomäus Werner , from 1876 by Werner , (born July 18, 1842 in Koblenz , † April 6, 1924 in Oldenburg ) was a German naval officer and naval writer .

Life

family

Bartholomew of Werner came from a first time in 1677 Waldstetten in records in Baden family. His father was Johann Peter Werner , his mother Anna Margaretha Werner. He married Anna, Countess von Hacke on April 8, 1866 . He was raised to the rank of Corvette Captain on March 1, 1876 in Berlin to the Prussian nobility .

Military career

He joined the Prussian Navy on April 24, 1856 . Werner undertook his first overseas voyage at the age of fourteen on the sailing corvette Amazone , which served as a training ship and took him to Madeira , among other places . On April 19, 1862 he became ensign at sea , on June 21, 1873 corvette captain and on March 22, 1880 captain at sea . In 1887 he was adopted at his own request, with the appointment of Rear Admiral .

Act

Von Werner took part in the first Prussian expedition to East Asia . As commander of the corvette SMS Ariadne , he undertook an extensive South Sea voyage from 1877 to 1879. The voyage went from the Strait of Magellan via Valparaíso to Panama and Nicaragua , the Marquesas , Tahiti , the Society Islands , the Bismarck Archipelago , New Zealand , Tonga and back. He signed a friendship treaty with Samoa on January 24, 1879 . He also signed treaties with the chiefs of the Marshall Islands , acquired two ports on the Duke of York Islands and, by occupying two ports, prevented the Samoa government from placing their islands under the protectorate of a foreign power.

After his departure he worked as a literary writer and, among other things, provided popular descriptions of life on warships as well as the nature of the sea and the areas he visited.

On November 26th, 1897 he was a founding member of the "Rowing Society Rhenania 1897, Koblenz" and from 1897 to 1902 chairman and finally honorary chairman.
