Basílio da Gama
José Basílio da Gama (born April 8, 1741 (according to other information: 1740 ) in São José do Rio das Mortes , Minas Gerais ; † July 31, 1795 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese - Brazilian poet , who was particularly well known by the blank verse published in 1769 - Epic O Uraguai became known.
Life
José Basílio da Gama, son of Manuel da Costa Villas-Boas and Quitéria Inácia da Gama, grew up in a simple family after the early death of his father. After the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1759, he went to Europe and between 1760 and 1767 traveled through different countries such as Italy and Portugal . In Italy he joined the literary group of Arcadians and wrote his poems under the pseudonym Termindo Sipílio . In early 1767 he returned to Brazil, where he attended the christening of the ship Serpente in Rio de Janeiro .
In his 1769 blank verse epic O Uraguai , he portrayed the struggle of the Portuguese against a Jesuit- fomented Guaraní war in Uruguay , which was led by the Guaraní Sepé Tiaraju . He was therefore in the Brazilian literature as one of the most important representatives of Arkadismus (Arcadismo) . He later returned to Portugal, where he died on July 31, 1795 in Lisbon .
The fourth seat (Cadeira) of the Academia Brasileira de Letras , founded in 1896, was named in his honor.
