history

Former Base branch in Berlin (2011)

The company was founded in 1998 under the name "KPN Orange" as a subsidiary of the Dutch Koninklijke KPN NV and the British Orange plc and began offering mobile communications services on the Belgian market on April 2, 1999 under the brand name "Orange". In the course of the takeover of Orange by France Télécom , the 50% stake in Base fell to France Télécom. However, since France Télécom already had a stake in the second largest Belgian mobile operator Mobistar , it had to part with one of its holdings and in 2000 transferred its stake to KPN. For legal reasons, KPN Orange was renamed Base . Base in Belgium has been part of the Telenet Group since 2015 .

The GSM -Netz (GSM 900 / DCS 1800) of base reaches 98% of the Belgian population. In 2007 the UMTS network was also launched by Base. The provider has 2,358,000 customers (as of January 2007). In addition to UMTS and GSM, Base also offers the data services GPRS and EDGE .

Base phone numbers usually start with 048x.

The prepaid provider “ Simyo ” and “ Ay Yildiz ” belonged to BASE until the takeover. Base also makes its network available to the Belgian mobile phone discounter "Dixitel", 1Mobile and NRJ Mobile . The prepaid brand “Aldi Talk”, marketed under Aldi Nord , was also implemented from 2007 onwards with the aid of Base's cellular network. Due to the tightening of the anti-terror law , the service was discontinued by Aldi due to a lack of personnel capacities in the individual branches.
