The Basilica of San Giovanni Bosco is a Roman Catholic church in Rome . The church in the Don Bosco quarter in the Cinecittà district belongs to the diocese of Rome . It is the third largest domed church in terms of diameter among the Roman churches after the Pantheon and St. Peter's Basilica .
history
The church was constructed from September 12, 1952 to 1964 by the Sicilian architect Gaetano Rapisardi, after he had won the Don Bosco Salesians competition .
The foundation stone was laid by the Cardinal Vicar of the Diocese of Rome, Clemente Micara, on September 12, 1952, but the actual work did not begin until the following year.
The associated parish was established by Micara on November 7, 1953 and handed over to the Salesians.
The consecration of the church took place on May 2, 1959 by Cardinal Benedetto Aloisi Masella , cardinal protector of the Salesians of Don Bosco, instead. The day after she visited Pope John XXIII. to pray in front of the urn of St. Don Bosco, which was brought from Turin to Rome especially for that day .
Pope Paul VI elevated the church with the Apostolic Constitution Romana haec sedes of February 5, 1965 to the title deaconry with the name of San Giovanni Bosco in via Tuscolana . On November 20, 1965, she was admitted to the basilicas by the Apostolic Letter Adulescentium patris .
Since November 20, 2010 the Cardinal Deacon Robert Sarah has held the title diaconia.
Architecture and art
The appearance of the church is characterized by its two domes, the larger of which has a diameter of 40 meters. On it stands a bronze work by Alessandro Monteleone , consisting of four angels, each three meters high, wearing a crown with a cross.
The facade by Arturo Dazzi shows the apotheosis of St. John Bosco , provided with the Latin inscription: Sancto J. Bosco AD MCMLVIII . To his right and left are six marble statues: the Archangels Michael and Gabriel (by Ercole Drei ), Saints Francis de Sales and Giuseppe Cafasso (by Giovanni Amoroso and Antonio Venditti ), and Popes Pius IX. and Pius XI. (by Francesco Nagni ).
The church has two symmetrical bell towers, of which only one bells the bell, one of the largest in Rome. It was made in 1957 by the Colbachini bell foundry from Bassano del Grappa .
The Way of the Cross was created by Venanzo Crocetti , the dome mosaics by Augusto Ranocchi . The original presbytery by Luigi Montanarini was modernized in 1992 by Costantino Ruggeri . The lower part is still characterized by a 100 square meter mosaic by Giovanni Brancaccio , which represents the Glory of San Giovanni Bosco .
The tabernacle behind the high altar was designed by Pericle Fazzini .

The organ in the podium was built between 1958 and 1959 by the Tamburini organ building company. The instrument has 80 registers (5,274 pipes ) on four manual works and a pedal . The actions are electric .:
