The Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary ( Hungarian Sarlós Boldogasszony-kegytemplom ) is a Roman Catholic church in the Mariagyűd district of Siklós in southern Hungary . history

In 1006, the Pécsvárad Abbey is said to have built the first chapel at a spring near the old Roman road Osijek-Pécs, in which a statue of the Virgin Mary was erected. A church was built here in 1148. This church was converted into a mosque after the Turkish invasion in 1543, and later it was also used by the Greek Orthodox and Calvinists. After the Turks were driven out by the Battle of Mohács in 1687, the church became Roman Catholic again and the Franciscans came to Gyűd, where an apparition of Mary was reported at that time.

Today's statue of grace was donated by Bishop Ferenc Nesselrod in 1713. The church was enlarged and baroque in 1739 and 1742, and the Franciscan monastery was built at the same time. Pope Pius VII approved the pilgrimage in 1805. In 1846, Bishop János Szcitovszky Máriagyűd officially declared a place of grace. The church was listed as a historical monument in 1921. In 1950, after the dissolution of the religious orders, diocesan priests took over the care. In 1964 the inside of the church was renovated, and in the 1980s the outside facades could also be renewed. In 2008 Pope Benedict XVI. the church to the rank of minor basilica .

architecture

The baroque church has a single nave . With a length of 37 meters and a width of 14 meters, it has a height of 22 meters. The towers of the double tower facade both reach a height of 49 meters. The Gothic choir is narrower and is separated from the nave by a triumphal arch , on which a representation of the apparition of Mary is shown. The barrel vault with its stitch caps is also brightly painted. The partly marble main altar and the wooden side altars literally frame the church.

The Franciscan monastery adjoins the basilica. Nearby there is a spring belonging to the pilgrimage site called Szent Pál kútja . Next to it is an open-air altar ( szabadtéri oltár ). Above the basilica there is a calvary with a chapel. Mariagyűd is the destination of the 420 km long pilgrimage from Esztergom .
