history

In the 13th century beguines settled outside of Vilvoorde in Steevoort. Sophie von Brabant , the wife of Duke Heinrich II , gave the beguines the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Our Lady and supported the expansion of the beguinage .

In 1457 the founder of the Carmelites , Johannes Soreth , initiated a community in Liège . After the destruction of Liège by Charles the Bold , a group of Carmelites went to Vilvoorde in 1469 to the beguinage, which was called Our Lady of Consolation. The monastery community is now the oldest existing in the order. In 1575, on the third Sunday after Easter, a procession passed through the streets of Vilvoorde for the first time and established today's pilgrimage on the Troostkermis. In 1578, during the iconoclasm , the monastery was demolished for strategic reasons to better defend the city. In 1586 the sisters were able to return from Mechelen and moved to the former St. Nicholas Hospital. This was rebuilt several times, with the partial new building from 1641 to 1646 the sister choir was built as a chapel. In 1663 the construction of the adjoining dome of the monastery church began and was completed two years later. The church was consecrated in 1671 by the Archbishop of Mechelen, Alphonsus de Berghes .

In 1973 the church was listed as a historical monument, in 2009 the entire monastery complex. The church underwent extensive renovations between 2000 and 2010. 2006 Pope Benedict XVI. the church to the rank of a minor basilica, the solemn proclamation took place by Godfried Cardinal Danneels on the weekend of the Troostkermis on May 7, 2006

architecture

The sandstone structure is divided into two sections. The older sister choir was built on a rectangular floor plan with three yokes in the late Gothic style. The choir stalls stand on its sides and the organ from 1907 is installed on the west side. The square church tower with four floors rises on the north side next to the third yoke. In it there is a door and a barred window that provides access to the monastery behind. To the east, the nurses' choir is adjoined by a six-sided baroque building , which is covered by a dome with a lantern and serves as a public prayer room. The altar stands in a following, rectangular choir with a three-sided apse and shows the statue of Our Lady of Consolation on its second floor.
