The Basilica of St. Dominic ( Maltese Il-Bażilika ta 'San Duminku ) or also known as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Safe Haven and St. Dominic is a Roman Catholic parish and monastery church in Valletta on the island of Malta . The church in the Archdiocese of Malta is consecrated to Saint Dominic and the Mother of God Mary and bears the title of a minor basilica . It is looked after by the Dominican Order , whose monastery is behind the church.

history

The land on which the church and monastery are built was given to the Dominican order by Grand Master Pierre de Monte . Girolamo Cassar was commissioned to draw up the plans. The foundation stone was laid in 1571. The parish was founded in the same year by a decree from Pope Pius V , who is considered to be the promoter of the construction of Valletta. It was determined that the parish of St. Dominic should be the main parish church in the city.

New Church

The old church was declared unsafe and closed after earthquakes and severe storms in 1780. 25 years later the new church was consecrated , the design of which is attributed to the Polish architect Stefano Ittar (1724–1790) who worked in Malta . In 1816 Pope Pius VII was the first on the island to raise it to the rank of minor basilica . Finally, in 1889, Archbishop Pietro Pace consecrated it to Our Lady of the Safe Harbor . (Valletta lies between two large natural docks.)

The late baroque church building with a cross-shaped floor plan has a double tower facade and a large dome over the crossing . The vault paintings, restored in 2017 , are by Giuseppe Calì. The restoration of the choir painting by Pietru Pawl Caruana continued in 2018 . The basilica is listed on the National Inventory of the Cultural Heritage of the Maltese Islands and is part of the Valletta UNESCO World Heritage Site.
