history

The congregation was founded in 1874 by three members of the Servite order and has been looked after by the order throughout its history. In a few months, a 31 meter long and 11 meter wide brick church was built on the acquired property . After various waves of immigration from Europe, the building became too small after 15 years. On June 17, 1890, the foundation stone for the current building was laid. The building was built according to plans by Henry Engelbert from Detroit. In 1899, after the first construction phases, the architect John Francis Pope was commissioned to build the towers, while the Chicago-based William J. Brinkmann was commissioned to design the interior. After completion, the church was consecrated on January 5, 1902. The church served a largely Irish and Italian congregation for decades. It was founded in 1956 by Pope Pius XII. raised to the rank of a minor basilica. After a fire in 1984, the right tower had to be torn down to the height of the gable. Since 1993 the church has also housed the national shrine of St. Peregrinus with relics, a Servite brother from the 14th century and patron saint of cancer and AIDS patients.

architecture

The single-nave church was designed in the Italian Neo-Renaissance style on the plan of a Latin cross . The church offers space for 2500 visitors over a length of 77 meters and a width of 28 meters. The continuous barrel vault is designed as a multi-colored coffered ceiling based on the Bramante model . Ten votive chapels framed by pilasters were created on the sides .

Furnishing

In the choir is the nine meter high high altar made of Carrara marble by the sculptor Augustine O'Callaghan. The west wall is pierced by three large, semicircular windows and surmounted by a large fresco depicting Christ and the founding fathers of the Servite order. The other walls are decorated with large paintings by Charles Bosseron Chambers and Henry Balink. The organ by the organ builder Lyon & Healy was installed in 1902, with the help of four manuals, 57 registers can be played.
