The Basilica of Our Lady of Nazareth in Exile ( Portuguese Basílica Nossa Senhora de Nazaré do Desterro ) is a Roman Catholic church in Belém in the Brazilian state of Pará . The church of the Archdiocese of Belém do Pará is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

Around 1700 a statue of the Virgin of Nazareth was found on the banks of the Murututu Igarapé . As a result, a hermitage was established here away from the settlement of Belem. With a growing number of believers, the parish was founded in 1861. After the foundation stone was laid on October 24th, 1909 by the then Archbishop of Belem, Santino Maria da Silva Coutinho , the church was built here by the Barnabites . The sophisticated, neoclassical and eclectic building based on Italian models and plans by Gino Coppede and Giuseppe Predasso dragged on until the 1950s, which was also due to difficulties in importing European materials. The church was founded in 1923 by Pope Pius XI. raised as the third in Brazil to the Basilica minor . In 1992 the Marian shrine was placed under monument protection by the state of Pará (No. 1324).

building

The five-nave church is 62 meters long, 24 meters wide and 20 meters high. The apse with the high altar connects directly to the transept . The two church towers reach a height of 42 meters and ring with nine bells, the largest weighs 2.8 tons. The interior of the basilica is characterized by the 32 columns made of solid granite and the 54 stained glass windows. The church is decorated with 38 mosaic medallions 1.5 meters in diameter and 19 statues made of Carrara marble . The vault of the apse is decorated with a large fresco . The organ with over 1000 pipes is operated via three manuals .

Círio de Nazaré

Cirio 2006

The basilica is the focal point of Brazil's largest religious festival, the Círio de Nazaré , which has been celebrated since 1790 and which brings more than two million participants to Belem. During the Círio de Nazaré, the so-called pilgrim statue, a replica of the statue found by Plácido, leaves the Cathedral of Belém on the second Sunday in October and goes in procession to the large square in front of the basilica. The festival was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2013 .
