Baskın Oran (born July 26, 1945 in Izmir ) is a Turkish politician and lecturer in the field of international affairs at the Chair of Political Science at Ankara University . He writes columns for the supplement radical Iki newspaper radical and for the Turkish-Armenian weekly Agos .

Life

Baskın Oran graduated from Ankara University in Political Science in 1968 and became an assistant there a year later. In 1971 he was expelled from the university, but was reinstated by decision of the State Council in 1972. He completed his PhD in 1974. He was expelled from the university again in 1982 as an assistant professor, but was able to resume his service in 1990 following a court decision. In 1991 he became a lecturer and in 1997 professor in the field of international affairs. He worked on topics such as nationalism, minorities, Turkish foreign policy and relations between state and religion.

He retired in early 2007 and worked at Oxford University for three months . Despite his retirement, he still taught at Ankara University.

He was a member of the Human Rights Council (tr: İHDK ) and chairman of its subcommittee on minority and cultural rights . On July 1, 2007, he ran as an independent candidate for the parliamentary elections for the 2nd constituency of Istanbul, but did not get enough votes.

On May 30, 2008, he received a death threat by email from the Turkish Revenge Brigade .

On December 15, 2008, he and Ahmet İnsel , Ali Bayramoğlu , Cengiz Aktar and around 1,000 other intellectuals started an Internet campaign to apologize to the Armenians . Regarding this action, Oran said that "our brains have been washed since 1923" and that "so much ignorance and ignorance comes from our educational system". The campaign about the Armenian genocide was called Özür Diliyorum .

In April 2013, Oran was appointed by the then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to a commission called the “Council of Wise Men” , which was supposed to support civil society in the peaceful end to the conflict with the Kurdish PKK , but ultimately remained quite ineffective.

Private

Baskin Oran is married to Feyhan Hanım, daughter of former Minister of Education Reşit Galip, and has two children. His daughter Sırma Oran lives in Lyon and is politically active. She was a candidate for the city of Villeurbanne in the 2008 local elections on the joint list of Les Verts and the Parti socialiste . But the resistance of the Armenian diaspora forced them to resign.
