Baudilius of Nîmes

The holy Baudilus (* perhaps in Orléans , † 360 in Nîmes ) suffered under the Roman emperor Julian the Apostate (360-363) in Nimes in southern France the martyrdom . He is the patron saint of the French cities of Nîmes and Poitiers . The parish church of San Boal is dedicated to him in the Spanish city ​​of Salamanca . In the Salamanca area, when it was very dry, processional processions were held to rain through the intercession of the saint. His holiday is May 20th.

Legend

According to legend , St. Baudilius came to Nîmes one day when a festival was being celebrated in honor of a pagan god. Baudilius condemned this festival and overturned a statue of a god. This angered the pagan priests. They beat Baudilius and had him beheaded with an ax. Legend has it that his skull bounced off the ground three times. A spring is said to have sprung from every point where he struck the earth. A chapel was built over these three sources, the Oratoire of the Trois-Fontaines. The body of Baudilius was taken by his wife to a place called Valsainte and buried there. His tomb soon became a destination for pilgrims . A church was built here in the 4th century and soon afterwards a monastery that existed until the 16th century.

In the church of San Torquato in Zamora there are relics of a martyr who is venerated under the name Baldiri , Baudelio or Boal , but probably comes from the province of Zamora . Some of the relics from the crypt of St. Baudilius in Nîmes are said to have been preserved in Cessy-les-Bois in Burgundy , which are said to have arrived there in the 10th century.
