Dark flowering variety

The tree-shaped shrub poplar is an annual, biennial or perennial herbaceous plant that grows almost tree-shaped and woody in the lower section of the stem, reaching heights of 50 to 300 centimeters. The upright stem only branches in the upper area. The stem has clear leaf and stipple scars, is initially green, then turns red and later olive and finally gray. The young parts of the plant, except for the petals, are covered with felt-like star hair.

The alternate leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The leaf stalk is green, tomentose and about as long as the leaf blade. The simple, short five- to seven-lobed, five- to seven-veined, almost circular and heart-shaped leaf blade has a diameter of about 15 centimeters, usually it is smaller. The top and bottom of the leaf blade are tomentose. The leaf margins are toothed and ciliate. The green stipules are awl-shaped, ciliate 2 to 4 mm long and fall off early.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from April to June. In an indeterminate, racemose inflorescence , the flowers stand together individually or two to five in the leaf axils. The green flower stalk is shorter than the bract, with a maximum length of 1 centimeter. The three spread out, tomentose-haired and ciliate, green outer sepals are broadly ovate, fused at the base to about half their length and with a length of about 8 mm, about twice as long as the sepals that surround them.

The hermaphrodite and protandric flowers are radial symmetry and have a diameter of about 3 centimeters. The five green, intensely downy hairy and ciliate sepals are fused up to about half of their 4 mm length and end in pointed triangular calyx tips. The 15 to 20 mm long, nailed petals are pink, with darker veins and a dark background. The stamen tube, about 10 mm long, is almost white with purple stripes; the free part of the stamens is pink-purple in color. The pollen is white. The ovary has six to eight mostly chambers, each with a single ovule . The six to mostly eight thin branches of the style are white.

The split fruit has a diameter of about 1 centimeter and breaks up into six to eight ribbed, angular, bald or tomentose hairy partial fruits. The partial fruit is completely filled with the individual seed.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.

Occurrence and use

The tree-shaped poplar is common on the coasts of western and southern Europe , Asia Minor , northwest Africa and the Canary Islands . Beach rocks and rubble sites are preferred as locations. It is also cultivated as an ornamental plant and occasionally goes wild.

Systematics

The species name Lavatera arborea was first published in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum , p. 690. Synonyms for Lavatera arborea L. are: Althaea arborea (L.) Alef. , Anthema arborea Medik. , Lavatera arborea var. Berlengensis (Boiss. & Reut.) Cout. , Lavatera arborea var. Genuina (Boiss. & Reut.) Cout. , Lavatera arborea var. Lasiocalyx Sennen , Lavatera eriocalyx Steudel , Lavatera veneta Mill. , Malva arborea (L.) P.Webb & Berthelot , Malva dendromorpha M.F.Ray , Malva fastuosa Salisb. But the relatively new name Malva dendromorpha M.F. Ray , which was only published in 1998 in the article New Combinations in Malva in Novon , 8 (3), p. 292, has not been recognized. The valid name was Malva arborea (L.) Webb & Berthel. stipulated in Vienna ICBN Art. 52. This species belongs to the section Anthema the genus Lavatera or in the section Malva the genus Malva .
