The Bayreuth beer brewery AG is a listed former brewery in the Upper Franconian city of Bayreuth .

history

Hugo Bayerlein (* 1833) returned from Munich to his hometown of Bayreuth as a 24-year-old brewer . There he began in 1857 on the Herzog , a hill west of the Red Main , to brew beer on a large scale for the time. At that time, pre-industrial brewing was still reserved for the classic trades of bakers and restaurateurs.

Between 1857 and 1858 industrial buildings that can be seen from afar were built on the Duke: malt house with kiln, brewery with water pump, pipelines, brewing pan, preheating pan, beer pumps, mash tun and beer tubs, a cold store with a fermenting cellar underneath, a house for the elevator to the rock cellars, a stable building and a barrel trip. Most of the buildings have been preserved and used today. In 1872 Hugo Bayerlein sold the Bayreuth brewery to the bankers von Feustel, Wilmersdörfer and Riemann as well as the landowner Roth. Friedrich von Feustel converted the brewery into a joint stock brewery in 1872 .

The majority of the brewery has been owned by the Maisel brewery family since 1965 .

Beer garden culture

The Herzogkeller is part of the building ensemble of the Bayreuth beer brewery. With over 1000 seats, it is the largest beer garden in Bayreuth. It was cultivated as early as 1888. Among other things, Crown Prince Ludwig is said to have frequented here.

catacombs

Like many historical areas in Bayreuth, the brewery's premises also have a cellar. These rock cellars were probably driven into the sandstone between the 15th and 19th centuries . The corridors were initially created by mining ore, but were later expanded and then mainly used for storage. In times of war, the facilities were also used as protection and escape systems. Because of the constantly cool temperatures, the rock cellars were a suitable place for storing beer in the late 19th century. Today guided tours are also offered in the rock cellars.
