The Bavarian State Collection for Paleontology and Geology (BSPG) in Munich is a research institution of the State Natural Science Collections of Bavaria , which deals with the history of the earth and its fossil ( paleontology ) and geological evidence. The tasks also include the recovery and securing of fossils, rocks , ores and minerals as the responsible state institution in Bavaria .

Since its creation in 1843, which was connected with the appointment of Johann Andreas Wagner as curator of the State and University Paleontological Collection , the State Collection has been associated with the Chair of Paleontology and Historical Geology at the Ludwig Maximilians University . On August 1, 2000, the Bavarian State Collection for Paleontology and Historical Geology was combined with the Geological State Collection to form a joint state collection with the current name. Publicly accessible parts of the State Collection are the Paleontological Museum Munich in the State Collection building and the Geological Museum Munich in the building of the “Institute for General and Applied Geology” of the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich at Luisenstrasse 37.

Gert Wörheide heads the BSPG as director.

Well -known curators were Edgar Dacqué , Joachim Schröder , Horst Gall , Richard Dehm , Gerhard Schairer and Ferdinand Broili at the BSPG or its predecessor institutions.
