Be Like the River is the second studio album by the New Zealand alternative metal band Devilskin . It was released on November 11, 2016 via Rodeostar and reached number one on the New Zealand album charts. In July 2017, the album was awarded a gold record in New Zealand .
Emergence
The band began working on the new album after the release of their debut album We Rise . In addition, the musicians used older ideas, such as the song We Rise , which was supposed to be the theme song of the debut album, but did not make it on the album. Devilskin wanted to work with producer Clint Murphy again. Since he had moved from New Zealand to England in the meantime , the band booked a small European tour around the studio stay in the spring of 2016. Jennie Skulander was pregnant at the time .
All tracks on the album were written by the band, with producer Clint Murphy participating in songwriting for the tracks Believe in Me , Bury Me , Grave , House 13 , Limbs and Pray . In total, the band created demos with 30 songs, eleven of which were used for the album. The album was recorded in England at Modern World Studios in Tetbury and at Dean Street Studios in London . Clint Murphy also took over the mix of Be Like the River , while Ryan Smith the mastering took over. The album cover was designed by Barney Bewick. For the songs Pray , Mountains , Voices and Believe in Me were music videos rotated.

According to bassist Paul Martin, Hope in the Dark is the main theme of the 13 songs on the album. It wouldn't be a concept album though . The album title comes from a song of the same name that did not make it onto the album. The title is supposed to express that you should remain true to yourself and never lose the strength to do the things you believe in against all odds. In addition, the title stands for perseverance and determination. The album cover shows the band's mascot , a skull named Jonny, carved in stone. The mascot represents a canyon through which water flows.
“The picture fits the story of our trip. The water breaks all obstacles in order to fulfill its purpose. Strength, determination, devotion. "
The band thanks their fans for their support with the song Voices . Skullander describes the band's supporters as an army with loud voices. The song Animal is about being steadfast, empowering and believing in yourself.

For Matthias Weckmann from the German magazine Metal Hammer , Devilskin have coordinated their new material “even more clearly with their impressive front woman”, whom he described as “one of the most exciting female voices in rock at the moment”. Since, however, “the really big hits and the stadium anthems are still missing” Weckmann awarded five out of seven points. According to Peter Kubaschk from the online magazine Powermetal.de, the new album appears “rounder, more mature and more homogeneous” than the debut work. With Jennie Skullander the band has “an ace up their sleeve” and this “trump card the band would play very confidently”. Kubashk awarded eight out of ten points. Philipp Gravenhorst from the online magazine Metal.de was more critical . Although the band arouses curiosity with their stylistic diversity, they are unable to use this and deliver songs “that go past the listener”. Since the album seemed "more like a record from a better opening act" to him, Gravenhorst awarded five out of ten points.
