Devilskin is a New Zealand alternative metal band from Hamilton .

history

Early Years and We Rise

The band was formed in June 2010 and was originally called Devilgun . The singer Jennie Skulander was previously active in the band Slipping Tongue , while guitarist Tony "Nail" Vincent played with Chuganaut before the band was founded. Bassist Paul Martin gained popularity in New Zealand through his radio show Ax Attack and played in the band Knightshade and Blackjack . After Paul Martin noticed that Skulander's old band had broken up, he offered her the post of singer, which Skullander initially refused. Six months later Paul Martin asked again and Skullander took part in a jam session . She was later to become Paul Martin's daughter-in-law . The band name is supposed to express that every person has a dark, evil side. The then 50-year-old drummer Bob McWhanell had to leave the band after a motorcycle accident . His successor was Paul Martin's then 15-year-old son Nic.

The band worked on their song material for several years and initially turned down offers from various record companies. In early 2014, the band recorded their debut album with producer Clint Murphy, some of which received massive airplay , especially from radio station The Rock . On July 11, 2014, the band released their debut album We Rise on their own record label , which promptly entered the New Zealand album charts at number one. Within two weeks, the album received a gold record and was certified platinum in March 2015 . Due to the great success, the band released the live album Live at the Powerstation in November 2014, which comes with a DVD . In February 2015 the band played two concerts in New Zealand as a support act for Slash before the first concerts in Europe followed in April 2015 .

Be Like the River and Red

On May 9, 2015, Devilskin opened for Mötley Crüe and Alice Cooper in the Auckland Vector Arena . At the New Zealand Music Awards , the band was nominated in the categories Highest Selling NZ Album , Best Rock Album and Breakthrough Artist , but the prizes went to Sol3 Mio , Shihad and Marlon Williams , respectively . About the German label Rodeostar was We Rise published on February 26, 2016 worldwide. At the same time, the band worked with producer Clint Murphy on their second album Be Like the River , which was released on November 11, 2016, again entered the New Zealand album charts at number one and was awarded gold in New Zealand in July 2017. After a show in the opening act of Disturbed in Auckland, a tour in Australia in the opening act of Halestorm followed in early 2017 , followed by a European tour in the spring of 2017. Devilskin could be seen in the opening act of Airbourne at the concerts in the United Kingdom .

Devilskin were at the New Zealand Music Awards 2017 in the category Best Rock Artist Award. The band was also nominated in the Best Group category, but the award went to SWIDT . Producer Clint Murphy was named Best Engineer . In addition, the album received a gold record in New Zealand in 2018. The following year Jennie Skulander developed endometriosis and had to undergo an operation. Her bandmates were working on the third studio album. After Skulander's recovery, Devilskin toured Europe in the fall of 2018, first as opening act for Halestorm, and then as headliner through the UK, before recording their third studio album. Red was released on April 3, 2020. The planned European tour with Like a Storm has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

style

Marcel Rudoletzky from the German magazine Metal Hammer described the music of Devilskin as a “powerful, modern rock and metal mixture”, with which the band sounds “contemporary and suitable for the masses”. Peter Kubaschk from the online magazine Powermetal.de compared Devilskin with bands like Stone Sour or Halestorm. Patrik Lienert from the online magazine Bleeding 4 Metal also made comparisons with Disturbed and Evanescence . According to bassist Paul Martin, there is no general term for the band's music.

The lyrics are written by the singer Jennie Skulander and the bass player Paul Martin. Jennie Skulander writes more about emotional things and her own experiences, which she tries to camouflage in her texts. Paul Martin's texts, on the other hand, are more of an observational nature.
