Be aware and share is a Swiss documentary from 2016 about the Basel relief organization of the same name , which was founded in 2015 in the context of the refugee crisis .

The film

The Swiss-Iranian filmmaker Omid Taslimi made a documentary together with Lasse Linder about a trip that Be aware and share took to the Croatian-Hungarian border in October 2015. The film shows how the project came about: the clothing collections at the beginning, the surprise about the great interest in the Basel population, the founding of the association, a benefit concert with Collie Herb , La Nefera , Neverage and other regional musicians. It reports on the logistical problems and how the team travels to Croatia with delivery trucks; It is shown how the Swiss helpers finally find Croatian allies and, together with them, at the border station in Botovo , give food and clothes to refugees who get off the train and cross the border to Hungary on foot.

The relief organization

When the refugee crisis worsened in the summer of 2015 , a team formed around the social worker Bastian Seelhofer that decided to transport relief supplies to the Hungarian-Croatian border. There were also missions for stranded refugees on the Greek island of Chios , a few kilometers from the Turkish coast. The Be aware and share team settled there, Seelhofer quit his job as a youth worker in Switzerland and from then on devoted himself entirely to aid projects.

In May 2016, Be aware and share founded a school on Chios. Through donations collected in Switzerland and through voluntary work, it offers several dozen refugee children and young people there a structured everyday school life with at least two lessons per day. The teachers are often themselves adult refugees; The classes taught include household, languages ​​(mainly English and the refugees' native languages, e.g. Arabic) and arithmetic. The charity works with other organizations and is financially supported by larger charities such as the Norwegian Refugee Council . It currently continues to operate in Switzerland and Greece .
