Bea Verschraegen (* 1955 in Gent , Belgium ) is an Austrian lawyer and professor at the University of Vienna .

Life

After graduating from high school in Ghent, Verschraegen began studying musicology and law at the University of Ghent in 1972 . In 1973 she moved to the University of Vienna , where she obtained the title Magistra iuris in 1977 and in 1978 Dr. iur. PhD. From 1976 to 1979 she worked as assistant to Hans W. Fasching in Vienna, from 1979 to 1980 as assistant to Theo Öhlinger and from 1980 to 1989 as assistant to Fritz Schwind . During her assistantship, Verschraegen undertook numerous research stays, including in Leiden , London , Leuven and at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. In 1989 she completed her habilitation in Vienna and received the venia legendi for the subjects of comparative law and international private law.

From 1990 to 1994 Verschraegen was an assistant professor at the Institute for Comparative Law in Vienna. At that time she undertook research stays in Heidelberg and at the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg . In 1992 she accepted a call from the University of Frankfurt (Oder) for a C4 professorship. In 1994, she moved in place of Haimo Schack at the University of Bielefeld , where she held the Chair of Civil Law, IPR, Comparative Law, European Civil Law and European Integration 1998. In 1998 she moved back to the University of Vienna, where she has since been a full professor for international private law and comparative law, taking into account private business law.

Verschraegen is a member of numerous associations. Among other things, she was President of CIEC from 2000 to 2001 , of which she has been Honorary President since 2002. She has also been a member of the American Law Institute since 2012 . She was also admitted to the bar in Slovakia in 2008. In 2016 she was accepted as a full member of the Academia Europaea .

In addition, Verschraegen has worked as a visiting professor several times , including at the universities of Salzburg , Sofia , Oxford , Bratislava , Maribor , Hong Kong , Sydney , Kyoto and Moscow .
