Bear Lake ( German Bear Lake ) is a natural lake on the border of the US states, Idaho and Utah .

Geographical location

The lake has an area of ​​282 km², a length of 32 km and a width of 13 km; it is up to 63 m deep.

It is 1821  m above sea level . Its location is on the northeast side of the Wasatch Range and on the east side of the Bear River Mountains .

Its water is used for irrigation in the Bear Lake Valley in southeast Idaho. Bear Lake's water has been channeled into the Bear River via the Bear River Outlet since 1915 .

The summer is dry and warm. In winter it is often foggy and snowy. The lake freezes over in winter.

fauna and Flora

The lake is a good fishing spot. Noteworthy are three endemic (that is, only occurring here worldwide) fish species from the Coregonine genus Prosopium .

The Bear Lake Valley is famous for its wild raspberry .

tourism

The lake is dark blue in color and, with its beaches, is very popular with summer tourists. There are several marinas and beaches on the lake. The two main tourist spots on the lake are Garden City and Laketown . Both the state of Utah and the state of Idaho have established a state park on the lake . Both parks are called Bear Lake State Park .
