Beate Kohler-Koch (born December 28, 1941 in Wuppertal ) is a German political scientist .

Life

Beate Kohler-Koch studied at the University of Cologne Economics . She received a Fulbright Scholarship which enabled her to study at the University of Kansas. She completed her diploma in economics and did her doctorate in 1970 in the subjects of economics, finance and political science. From 1967 to 1969 she was a research assistant at the Research Institute for Political Science and European Issues at the University of Cologne. In addition, from 1969 to 1973 she was director of the European Politics Education Center (later: Institute for European Politics ) in Cologne / Bonn. From 1972 to 1990 she was professor of political science at the Technical University of Darmstadt . In 1977/1978 she was visiting professor at the Johns Hopkins University , School for Advanced International Studies in Bologna and in 1987 at the European Institute of Public Administration in Maastricht .

From 1990 to January 2007 she held the chair for political science at the University of Mannheim (since 1997 Jean Monnet Chair of European Integration ). From 1998 to 2002 she held a visiting professorship at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna . In 1999 she held a research professorship at the Science and Politics Foundation in Ebenhausen . In addition, she has been an honorary professor at Nankai University in Tianjin ( People's Republic of China ) since 2001 . Since 2005 she has been a visiting professor at the University of Bremen on the subject of changing statehood . On September 2, 2008, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Oslo for her achievements in integration research in the European Union and for Europe-wide scientific networking.

Kohler-Koch was a member of the Grand Senate of the University of Mannheim from 1997 to 2001. She is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities , the Scientific Advisory Board of the Hessian Foundation for Peace and Conflict Research (PRIF) and Chairwoman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Center for European Legal Policy (ZERP). She is also a member of the editorial board and scientific advisory board of numerous specialist journals , for example the newspaper for international relations (ZIB) and the European Journal of International Relations (EJIR). She is currently visiting professor at the ARENA Center for European Studies at the University of Oslo .

Research priorities

Current research focuses include “Institutional Change in the Process of European Integration” , “Opportunities for Democratic Governance in the European Multi-Level System and “Involvement of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in European Policy Making ”. In the area of ​​interdisciplinary and international research networking, she is a member of the research and training network Dynamics and Obstacles of European Governance and she oversees a research cooperation with China.
