Beate Schmidt (judge)

Beate Schmidt (* 1955) is a German lawyer and President of the Federal Patent Court .

Life

Schmidt studied law at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg from 1974 and passed the first state examination in 1979 and the second state examination in 1982. From 1982 to 1986 she worked as a judge at the Aschaffenburg District Court and at the Aschaffenburg District Court and as a public prosecutor.

In 1986 Beate Schmidt moved to the Federal Ministry of Justice as a copyright officer . She was taken over into the federal service in 1989 and initially worked in the personnel department, and from 1991 as a personal assistant to the State Secretary. In December 1994 she was appealed to the Federal Patent Court. Here she was a member of a complaint panel responsible for trademark law.

From May 1997 Schmidt headed the human resources and budget department of the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA). In February 2000 she was appointed head of main department 3 of the DPMA, which deals with trademarks , utility models and designs . She was the first female division president of this agency. From August 2006 to April 2011, Schmidt was director of the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Trademarks, Designs and Models) (OHIM), initially as head of a trademark department, and from June 2009 as head of the main department for cancellation and legal proceedings.

With effect from May 1, 2011, Beate Schmidt was appointed President of the Federal Patent Court. She was introduced to her new office with a ceremony on May 3, 2011, and her predecessor Raimund Lutz was bid farewell.
