history

Beatrixpark (Amsterdam)

In 1932 the director of the building authority ( Publieke werken ) submitted the proposal to create a park between the Scheldeplein square and the Beethovenstraat. In 1933 a plan to lay out the park was drawn up and approved by the mayor at the time in 1935. The decision was made to have the park created by the unemployed (“werkverschaffingsproject”). The cost was estimated at 300,000 guilders , which was accepted by the local council.

Beatrixpark was officially opened in May 1938 and is one of the oldest city parks in Amsterdam. The design for the oldest part of the park comes from the Dutch architect Jakoba Mulder .

Initially the park was called Park Zuid ("Park South"). In June 1938 it was given the name Beatrixpark and during the Second World War it was temporarily called “Diepenbrockpark” from 1942 to 1945. After 1945 it got its current name back.

The park has two cycle paths, the Boerenweteringpad and De Groene Zoom .
