Becrux or Mimosa is the proper name of the star β Crucis (Beta Crucis). It is the second brightest star in the Southern Cross constellation . Its distance is about 300 light years .

The IAU has the proper name on July 20, 2016 Mimosa defined as standardized proper name for this star.

Characteristics

Becrux has a spectographic binary star component, but it is too close to be resolved with a telescope . The pair orbits 8 AU away every 5 years . Becrux is a Beta Cephei - variable star of spectral type B0.5 III and probably the strongest of the one like stars.

Because Betacrux with a declination of −60 ° is only conspicuously visible south of the tropic , it has not been given a trivial name . However, "Mimosa" is an often used name because of its color. In Chinese , Becrux is also known as 十字架 三 (the third star in the cross).
