history

Bedekaspel church and cemetery

Bedekaspel was in the 13th century still Lopessumwalde , in the Munster parish registers of the 15th century but already Betekerke called, which corresponds to today's Bedekaspel. The name is possibly a combination of the old Frisian terms bēte (= penance) and kerke (= church). Accordingly, the place name originally means penitential church . Probably the part of the name was Kerke through the Middle Low German term kaspel (= parish) replaced after the village had grown into a parish.

Another version of the naming is based on the fact that there should have been two churches in the past. The translation from Low German is: Bede (for both) and Kaspel (for parish) so both parishes .

During the Christmas flood of 1717 , the 13th century Bedekaspeler church was so badly damaged that it - except for the tower - had to be removed and rebuilt.

economy

In addition to agriculture , tourism is of great economic importance for the place today. In the main season, the "population" of the scattered village can multiply to almost 3000 people when the weekend houses, holiday homes, caravan and camping sites are almost full.
