Oldeborg has been part of the municipality of Südbrookmerland in the district of Aurich in East Friesland since the municipal area reform of July 1, 1972 .

Location and area

Oldeborg is a scattered settlement . It is located about 2.5 kilometers north-northeast of Georgsheil. Overall, the district covers an area of 24.03 square kilometers, which rise to heights of 0.5 to 2.5 meters above sea level. Oldeborg was largely built on Plaggenesch soils, which are underlain by Podsol - Gley soils.

history

The village name Oldeburg ( old castle ) refers to a fortified property that was the ancestral seat of the powerful tom Brok chief family in the 14th and 15th centuries . From here the family expanded their power over all of East Friesland and the neighboring areas in what is now the Netherlands .

The East Frisian chief Keno tom Brok also had his seat on the Oldeborg . His son Ocko extended his power to almost all of East Frisia. Under chief Focko Ukena from Leer , many East Frisian chiefs allied against Ocko tom Brok and tried to destroy the power of tom Brok. On October 28, 1427 the last battle took place near Oldeborg, which became famous as the Battle of the Wild Fields in East Friesland. After this battle the castle was razed and not rebuilt. A memorial stone at the site of the battle today indicates the event, which was very significant for East Frisian history.

As early as 1938, the formerly independent rural communities of Engerhafe , Fehnhusen , Oldeborg and Upende were merged to form the larger municipality of Oldeborg, which together roughly comprised the area of the medieval parish Engerhafe. Oldeborg was the only accession municipality to have a coat of arms, the eagle of which can be found in the coat of arms of Südbrookmerland. The eastern part of the village Upende-Victorbur also belongs to the current district of Oldeborg.

Development of the place name

The village was first mentioned in 1415 as Oldenborch . The current spelling has been in use since 1719. The name is a combination of the Middle Low German terms olt or olde (= old) and Borg (= castle). It stands for the old castle of tom Brok, whose new one was in Aurich.

politics

Oldeborg had 1550 inhabitants in 2005. The mayor is Frerich Hinrichs (SPD). The following mayors were active in Oldeborg from 1945 until the local government reform in 1972:

  • 1948 to 1961: Johann Leehrhoff
  • 1961 to 1972: Seven Philipps

coat of arms

Oldeborg was the only municipality in southern Brookmerland that had its own coat of arms before the municipal reform in 1972 with the triple crowned eagle on a red background. He was the heraldic animal of the chiefs tom Brook, who lived in the castle in Oldeborg as a mansion in the 14th and 15th centuries. Today the eagle is part of the Südbrookmerlander coat of arms.
