Encounters to promote young people

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Encounters targeting young people ( s. : Encounters of Youth Promotion , there. : Encuentros de Promoción Juvenil , abbreviation: EYP-EPJ ) is from the Holy See recognized association of the faithful in the Roman Catholic Church . It was founded in Colombia in 1968 , its membership is given as 3,500, spread across 14 countries worldwide.

history

The encounter took place in Medellín (Colombia) in 1968 under the direction of the priest José María Pujadas Ferrer (1915–1984), who had previously worked with a cursillo movement in Gerona, Spain . The admonitions of Pope Paul VI were decisive for this foundation . (1963–1978) and the Latin American Bishops' Council (CELAM), it was agreed that the young people deserved more attention and encouragement. As a result of these initiatives, youth work was accelerated by the EPJ; it developed the so-called “Medellin Document”, which is still the EPJ's Magna Charta today. For the next 30 years the movement grew in America and Europe and on June 29, 1996, it was recognized by the Pontifical Council for the Laity as an international association of believers under papal law.

The self-image of EPJ is based on the Cursillo movement and would like to encourage young people to lead a Christian life. The movement focuses on human and spiritual education, group work, common prayer and regular participation in the Eucharist. EPJ wants to convey basic values of Christianity to young people and encourage them to share experiences. For this purpose, the association organizes encounters for young people aged 18 and over so that they can be encouraged in their developments and decisions.

EPJ is known internationally, especially in Spanish-speaking countries, also as "EMPROISTA". This synonym comes from a word created from the maritime vocabulary and describes two people who stand behind a ship's steering wheel, one steers the ship and the other shows the right way. The international emblem is the ship's steering wheel, it is supposed to symbolize Jesus Christ as the helmsman who shows the right way. In the middle of the steering wheel are the letters IXΘΥΣ, which are meant to indicate that Jesus is at the steering wheel.
