content

Seven computers are produced every second worldwide. Behind the Screen takes a look behind the scenes of the electronics industry, initially in the rainforest of Ghana . There young gold miners stand up to their knees in the mud. They work hard with shovels and picks in the tropical heat. The gold has had negative effects for them, because large mining companies have long been exploiting the precious land, and rivers are poisoned by the mercury and cyanide used in gold mining . The gold won finds its way into the printed circuit boards of computers. Electronics prices have been falling for years. In the Czech Republic , workers assemble the computers, the global competition in the sector is carried out on their backs.

In a dark alley in Pardubice , Janko says: He toiled on the assembly line twelve hours a day, six days a week, for a starvation wage of two to three euros an hour. Some pass out, collapse. The lifespan of the computers produced is falling and new models flood the market every day. The trail of discarded PCs leads back to Ghana. Dark clouds of smoke rise up at the electronic waste dump in Agbogbloshie . An apocalyptic scene - like straight out of an end-of-time film. Computer screens, printers and keyboards pile up meters high. Every month, 500 container loads of electronic waste from industrialized countries land in Ghana. Officially declared as second-hand goods, 90% are rubbish on arrival. Children tear apart computers with their bare hands, smash screens. The flames blaze brightly when they burn the plastic sheaths. The toxic fumes hit them right in the face. Selling the scraps of metal brings meager earnings. The toxic legacy of the information age claims its victims.
