The Beinn Alligin ( Gaelic for mountain beauty or jewel-bedecked mountain ) is an up to 986-meter-high mountain range in the Scottish Highlands . It is located northwest of Torridon in the Torridon Hills in the Council Area Highland on the west coast of Scotland. Two of the peaks of the Beinn Alligin, the Tom na Gruagaich with a height of 922 meters at the southern end of the massif and the 986 meters high Sgùrr Mhòr in the middle of the massif are classified as Munro , the Tom na Gruagaich, however, only since 1997.

The Horns of Alligin

The Beinn Alligin is a semicircular, south-opening massif that rises steeply above the enclosed Corrie . Like the neighboring Liathach , the Beinn Eighe consists of Torridonian sandstone on a gneiss substructure . The Tom na Gruagaich as the southernmost summit of the massif runs over wide slopes to the south and west, here is also the easiest approach through the Coir nan Laogh, a steep cirque cut into the southern slope At the point of the massif lies a wide, deeply cut saddle. The Horns of Alligin , a steep ridge consisting of several peaks, join the Sgùrr Mhòr to the east . The massif is separated from the neighboring Liathach to the east by a deep valley.

The entire massif is a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers, especially since the Beinn Alligin is technically the easiest of the three great mountains of Torridon (the other two are the Liathach and the Beinn Eighe ). The two Munros des Beinn Alligin are the preferred destination for mountaineers and Munro excavators and are best accessed from the south. On the narrow single track road from Torridon to Lower Diabaig along the north bank of Loch Torridon there is a parking lot at the start of the approach.
