Ben Avon is a borough in Allegheny County in the US state of Pennsylvania and is located on the Ohio River . In 2010, Ben Avon had 1,781 residents. The place belongs to the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area .
The name Ben Avon comes from Scottish and means "mountain of water"
geography
Ben Avon is located at 40 ° 30 ′ N , 80 ° 5 ′ W (40.507418, −80.082162) and lies on the north bank of the Ohio River at an elevation of 258 m . Ben Avon borders Emsworth to the west and Avalon to the east . On the ridge above Ben Avon in the north lies Ben Avon Heights . The Pennsylvania State Route 65 runs as the 65th Infantry Division Memomrial Highway near the shore through Ben Avon and connects the place with Pittsburgh, about ten kilometers away .
According to the United States Census Bureau , Ben Avon has a total area of 1.2 km², of which 1.0 km² is land and 0.2 km² (= 14.89%) is water.
history
Ben Avon was incorporated as a borough out of Kilbuck Township in January 1891 .
Like many of the early suburbs of Pittsburgh, it was originally connected to the city by a railway line, the Pittsburgh and Fort Wayne Railroad . The station was built where a merchant from Allegheny built a summer home in 1870, now known as Arthur-Johnson House. The railway line was shut down in 1950.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Ben Avon was inhabited by 1917 people. The population density was 1850.4 people per km ². There were 825 housing units at an average of 796.3 per km ². The population Ben Avon consisted of 95.93% of White , 2.45% Black or African American , 0.37% Native American , 0.26% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0.05% said other races to belong and 0.94% named two or more races. 0.47% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Ben Avon distributed to 784 households out of which 32.0% were living in children under 18 years of age. 51.9% of households were married, 11.6% had a female head of household without a husband, and 34.6% were not families. 28.6% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 8.4% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.05.
The population was divided into 25.3% minors, 5.2% 18–24 year olds, 33.9% 25–44 year olds, 23.7% 45–64 year olds and 11.9% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 women there were 87.2 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 83.1 men.
The median household income in Ben Avon was 54,926 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 66,875 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 44,107 versus $ 33,393 for women.
