Ben Garrison (* 20th century ) is an American political cartoonist . His work is mainly taken up by the Alt-Right . Many of his drawings have a sexist and racist background. Garrison sees himself as libertarian .

Life

Ben Garrison began drawing caricatures as a teenager. After graduating from high school, he attended Angelo State University in the 1970s, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts and graduated with a Magna cum laude in 1979 .

At first Garrison tried his hand at painting, but then began working as a graphic artist for the San Angelo Standard-Times , where he also published his first cartoons. He then lived in Seattle for 20 years, where he worked for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer until he was hired . He then moved to West Montana . He became a political cartoonist after the financial crisis in 2007 . The bailout for the giant investment banks made him angry and so he started his political cartoons. These were initially directed against the US central bank system , but also dealt with other subjects, including vaccinations and abortions . Initially, the not particularly politically correct cartoons were rejected by the newspapers, so he published them on his website and in various forums , where they quickly went viral . Celebrities like Donald Trump , Ann Coulter and Dan Scavino have also shared his cartoons.

As of 2010, his caricatures were widely used and used by right-wing forums in particular. Some of them were modified by right-wing trolls and given anti-Semitic motifs. In particular , his cartoons are shared on the Breitbart News Network , 4chan and 8chan . However, some of his cartoons are also anti-Semitic and racist themselves. When Garrison wanted to take action against these altered caricatures, the trolls began to intensify their work and created "Ben Garrison, Nazi cartoonist" and the fictional character "Cyclone Ben". They published false and edited cartoons on his behalf and distributed them through various channels. They also spread false information. For example, they had his name appear on an allegedly leaked KKK membership list . Andre Oboler of the Online Hate Prevention Institute tried to support him against these trolls with moderate success.

Garrison sees himself as a representative of the Freedom of Speech and a libertarian. As a representative of freedom of expression, he sees “political correctness” and so-called “ social justice warriors ” as enemy images. During the election campaign, he published some Trump cartoons that portrayed him positively and cartoons against Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama . However, he stated that he had no particular sympathy, but admired Trump for his fight against "political correctness".

Criticism and controversy

Even if many of his works have been modified by trolls online, many of his works in the original are also controversial. In particular, a comparative caricature between Michelle Obama and Melania Trump caused a sensation, in which Obama was drawn in a racist and transphobic manner with muscular forearms and a bulge in the genital area, a hard face and otherwise unattractive.

A 2017 cartoon showed Trump's former security adviser HR McMaster and General David Petraeus being led as puppets by George Soros . The caricature becomes anti-Semitic because Soros himself is controlled by a hand with Rothschild’s inscription . In doing so, he adapted the anti-Semitic conspiracy theory of world Jewry . Shortly afterwards he was officially discharged.

In 2018, Ron Paul's Twitter account posted an anti-Semitic and racist cartoon in which a hook-nosed Jew, a black man with oversized lips, an Asian with slit eyes and a Neanderthal man beat Uncle Sam while shouting "Cultural Marxism" . The cartoon was signed with Ben Garrison. Shortly afterwards, Paul distanced himself from the picture that an employee had posted without his knowledge. Ben Garrison denied that this cartoon was his.

A cartoon against teenage activist and parkland survivor David Hogg portrayed him as a 2018 dummy from CNN and the so-called Deep State .
