Ben Stapp

Benjamin "Ben" Stapp (born January 14, 1982 in California ) is an American jazz musician ( tuba , composition ).

Live and act

Stapp studied at UCLA with Tommy Johnson before continuing his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester , where he studied tuba with Roger Bobo and composition with Anthony Gilbert . In the 2000s he lived in Europe for a while and played a. a. in the formations Dakah Hip-Hop Orchestra, in the Alipio C. Neto Quartet ( The Perfume Comes Before the Flower (2007), a.o. with Herb Robertson ) and The Archaic Future Players (with Dave Noyes , Jeremy Udden , Kenny Warren ) and with Franz Hautzinger , Red Baraat, the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and Anti-Social Music . In 2008 he released his debut album Ecstasis (Uqbar Music, with Tony Malaby and Satoshi Takeishi ). At the beginning of the following decade he worked a. a. with Sanda Weigl , Stephen Haynes , Joel Harrison , Robert Sabin and Jeff Newell.

Stepp is currently (2016) working with his band The Zozimos , which includes Satoshi Takeishi (percussion), Stephen Haynes (cornet / flugelhorn), Oscar Noriega (clarinet) and Rebekah Heller (bassoon). He performed with The Zozimos in New York venues such as Stone, Cornelia Street Cafe , the Tea Lounge and Roulette and won first prize in the Bob Stewart Tuba Competition as part of the 38th Duke Ellington Jazz Festival , which made him work on the commissioned composition Eight Houses (2011) made it possible. In 2011 the album Eight Houses for Brass & Electronics was released , u. a. with Satoshi Takeishi, Shoko Nagai and Nate Wooley . This was followed by Stapp's opera project Myrhha's Red Book , based on Carl Gustav Jung's “Red Book”, which premiered in 2013. In the field of jazz he was involved in four recording sessions between 2007 and 2014.
