Benedikt Dolf (born August 13, 1918 in Zillis ; † August 5, 1985 in Schiers ; also known as Benedetg Dolf ) was a Swiss composer .

Live and act

Dolf's father Tumasch Dolf was a Romansh poet, song collector and composer, he also worked as a secondary school teacher.

Benedikt Dolf attended high school in Chur, where his interest in music was encouraged and he received piano lessons. He was interested in the composer Paul Hindemith . During the 5th year of high school he attended theory lessons with Antoine E. Cherbuliez at the Conservatory in Zurich. Dolf's first works were composed at the age of 18, including a "Sonata for violin and piano" in 1936.

After graduating from high school in 1938, Dolf wanted to study music, but at his parents' request he first enrolled at the theological faculty in Zurich. In 1941 he attended a class for counterpoint with Paul Müller-Zurich , acquired a diploma in theory and counterpoint and took a position as a reformed pastor in Valendas .

In 1948 Dolf resigned from the pastor's office and finished his music studies. In 1952 he graduated from the Conservatory in Zurich, where he again attended courses in composition with Paul Müller-Zurich and majored in piano . He also attended lectures with Paul Hindemith. The "Sonata for Violin and Piano in B minor (1951)" dates from this period.

In 1957 Dolf was hired as a music teacher for piano and organ at the teachers' seminar in Chur, and in the same year he obtained his concert diploma as a pianist from Czesław Marek . Until 1984 he taught at the teacher training college in Chur. In addition to his teaching activities, he composed compositions. The confrontation with Graubünden, nature and the Romanesque folk wealth shaped his work more and more. He set some of his father's songs anew, looked for Rhaeto-Romanic texts by Romansh authors and set them to music. Over 400 songs for choirs and solo voices were created.

In Rofels above Maienfeld he lived with his wife Trudi Dolf-Briner, a sculptor, and his daughter Menga, who also became a visual artist.

Benedikt Dolf was connected to the Grisons composers Brüesch, Schütter, Gion Antoni Derungs and Gion Giusep Derungs . Martin Derungs was his student and Dolf followed his work with great interest. In Rofels he dealt with the music of the present and the past. So he archived 5000 cassettes of various music recordings from the radio, collected 3000 LPs and built a library of 5000 books. His friend Räto Tschupp made sure that Dolf's work, including a complete catalog of works, is now stored in the Graubünden State Archives.

Dolf's musical work includes, among other things, choral and solo songs in Romansh and German, festival music, orchestral works, organ and chamber music works and compositions of film or radio play music.

In 1980 Dolf received the Graubünden government's recognition award for his services to the Graubünden musical life and the promotion of Rhaeto-Romanic culture.
