Tumasch Dolf (born July 31, 1889 in Mathon GR ; † October 3, 1963 in Zillis ) was a Swiss teacher , school musician, composer , choir director and song collector from the Romansh- speaking Schams in the canton of Graubünden .

Life

Dolf obtained the secondary teacher diploma in 1908 . In Zurich he studied with Carl Vogler at the Conservatory and in 1921 obtained his school music diploma. From 1908 to 1952 he taught in Donat , Zillis and Tamins . From 1917 to 1920 he was president of the Uniun Rumantscha da Schons . In 1912 Caspar Decurtins commissioned him to collect and record folk songs from the Schamserberg . He published the text collection and 30 notated melodies in the Annalas da la Societad Retorumantscha , the commentaries on it in the Heimatbuch Schams .

Dolf was married to Berta Plattner from Langenbruck . Benedikt Dolf was his son.

Compositions

Numerous compositions for choir and singspiele come from Dolf. In 1924 he created his most famous Singspiel, the “Stiva da Filar” (spinning room) from twelve well-known folk song melodies. On behalf of the Swiss Society for Folklore , he recorded around 1000 Graubünden folk songs. He set poems by Gion Mani, Gian Fontana , Peider Lansel , Leza Uffer , Sep Mudest Nay and Alfons Tuor , among others .

One of Dolf's most famous compositions is the song Allas steilas (To the Stars), one of the most famous songs in the Sursylvanian language. There are also sound recordings of works by Dolf, as well as editions of his works as well as a souvenir tape from his pen.

Dold's estate is in the Graubünden State Archives .
