Benedict Ganesh Singh (born December 2, 1927 in Buxton , Guyana , † September 12, 2018 in Georgetown ) was a Guyanese clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Georgetown .

Life

Benedict Ganesh Singh was born into a large family; his parents were Joseph Alexander Singh and his wife Matilda Amanda Fredericks. He studied philosophy and theology and was at the Urban -University in Rome to Dr. theol. PhD . He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Georgetown on December 7, 1954 in Rome .

On his return to Guyana, Benedict Singh was chaplain of Our Lady of the Mount Parish in the Meadow Bank neighborhood of Georgetown. From 1958 to 1968 he was pastor of the parish Our Lady of the Annunciation in Malgre Tout near Vreed en Hoop , which also included the Essequibo Islands (Wakenaam) and the opposite coastline. Bishop Richard Lester Guilly SJ appointed him Vicar General of the Diocese of Georgetown in 1968 .

Pope Paul VI appointed Benedict Singh on January 16, 1971 Titular Bishop of Arsennaria and Auxiliary Bishop in Georgetown. Bishop Richard Lester Guilly ordained him episcopal on April 18 of that year ; Co- consecrators were Kenneth Roderick Turner SFM , Bishop of Lishui , and Patrick Webster OSB , Bishop of Saint George's in Grenada .

On August 12, 1972, he was named Bishop of Georgetown. On November 10, 2003, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Benedict Singh died after a long illness in 2018 at Balwant Singh Hospital in Georgetown. He was buried in the crypt of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Georgetown.
