Benedikt Welte (born November 25, 1805 in Ratzenried , † May 27, 1885 in Rottenburg am Neckar ) was a German Catholic Old Testament scholar.

Life

After studying theology in Tübingen and Bonn, Welte was ordained a priest in 1833. From 1835 he was a repetitionist at the Wilhelmsstift in Tübingen, in 1838 he became an associate professor, and in 1840 he became a full professor for the Old Testament in Tübingen. In 1857 he was appointed cathedral capitular in Rottenburg; for health reasons he hardly worked scientifically from then on.

His work on the Old Testament flowed mainly between 1836 and 1856 into his articles in the Theological Quarterly , of which he was co-editor from 1840, and into the introduction edited and edited by him (1840–44).

Together with Heinrich Joseph Wetzer , he edited the twelve-volume church lexicon from 1847 to 1860 , which was “an encyclopedic standard work as a joint work of the leading Catholic scholars of the time”. He contributed numerous articles himself.
