Bengkalis ( Indonesian Pulau Bengkalis ) is an Indonesian island off the east coast of Sumatra in the Strait of Malacca .

geography

The island is 67 km long, almost 20 km wide and consistently flat. With an area of ​​929 km² it is the fourth largest of a whole series of islands lying off the east coast of Sumatra, each separated by an inlets just a few kilometers wide: the island of Rupat is about 60 km to the north-west and the island is immediately to the south Padang . Southwest of Bengkalis lies Sumatra, from which it is separated by the Bengkalis Strait, and to the north begins the open Strait of Malacca.
