Bengt Horn

Bengt Klasson Horn (born November 10, 1623 in Vikhus , † February 7, 1678 in Riga ) was a Swedish governor-general in Estonia .

Life

Origin and family

Bengt was a member of the family of the Swedish barons Horn . His parents were the councilor and heir on Åminne, Freiherr Klas Kristersson Horn (1587–1651) and Sigrid Oxenstierna (1590–1644). The Field Marshal Krister Horn (1622-1692) was his brother.

Horn entered the state of marriage three times:

⚭I 1652 with Margareta Sparre (1631–1660), maid of honor of Queen Christina
⚭II 1662 with Ingeborg Banér (1641–1675)
⚭III 1677 with Margareta Bielke (* 1653)

Career

Horn, although intended for civil service, decided at the age of 23 to join the army . He joined General Carl Gustaf Wrangel and took part in the final years of the Thirty Years War. In 1648 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and returned to Sweden in 1651, where he became colonel of the royal bodyguard in 1653 . From 1654 to 1655 he was Governor of Halland . In 1655 he was sent to Poland with the Leibregiment . Here he was able to distinguish himself during the siege of Marienburg . After taking the city, he became the commandant . In the same year, he rose to major general and was appointed governor general of Estonia. Later he was also one of the preparers of peace in Cardis . 1660 was appointed to the Imperial Council. He remained governor in Estonia until 1674 and was also president of the Svea hovrätt from 1674 to 1677 . In 1677 he was promoted to field marshal.
