Berberis horrida is a species of plant from the family of Barberry (Berberidaceae). She is from Chile . The species was described by Claude Gay in 1845.

description

Berberis horrida grows as a shrub that can reach heights of up to 2 meters. The bark of young twigs is yellowish to bluish-gray or reddish-gray, smooth to not very hairy, sometimes with numerous black spots; older branches have gray, sometimes sticky bark. The thorns are star- to leaf-like, the individual thorn branches 2 to 6 millimeters long.

The stiff, leathery leaves are elliptical to oval, sometimes divided in the shape of a hand, 1 to 4 centimeters long and 0.5 to 2.2 centimeters wide, light gray-green to brown in color, matt or shiny on the top, clearly bristly hairy on the underside. The leaf margin is covered with 2 to 4 thorns on each side, the leaf is prickly.

The inflorescence is a sessile umbel with 3 to 10 yellow flowers , the pedicels of which are 5 to 10 millimeters long. The flowers are only 3 to 5 millimeters in size and contain 14 bracts . The berry fruit is 4 to 6 millimeters long and contains two to three seeds that are 3 to 4 millimeters long.

Berberis horrida blooms in their native country in September and October; the fruits ripen in January and February.

Occurrence

The plant species called michay in Chile is endemic to central Chile ; their distribution extends from the La Campana National Park to the province of Colchagua . It grows at altitudes from 800 to 1000 meters above sea level. Their habitat is threatened by use as agricultural land, which is why Berberis horrida is rare in its natural habitat today and is now one of the rarest Berberis species in Chile.
