Bermo is a rural municipality and the capital of the Bermo department of the same name in Niger .

geography

Bermo is located in the Sahel region . The neighboring communities are Ingall in the north, Gadabédji in the east, Azagor , Birni Lallé and Roumbou I in the south and Azèye and Tamaya in the west. The municipality is divided into 17 administrative villages, two camps and 95 water points. The main town of the rural municipality is the administrative village of Bermo. The vegetation is characterized by marula trees , oschers , umbrella acacias and desert dates.

history

In 1988 an administrative post ( poste administratif ) was set up in Bermo, a lower administrative unit headed by a chef de poste administratif . The rural community of Bermo was established as an administrative unit in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform in a previously community-free area in the north of the Dakoro department . The administrative post of Bermo was removed from the Dakoro department in 2011 and raised to the Bermo department.

population

At the 2001 census, Bermo had 14,076 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 30,761. Members of the Fulbe subgroups Wodaabe and Kassawsawa, the Tuareg subgroup Keltamerkest as well as Hausa and Arabs live in Bermo .

Culture

There is a small Roman Catholic parish in Bermo , which was founded in 1963 and belongs to the Maradi diocese .

Economy and Infrastructure

The parish is located at the transition from the agropastoral zone of the south to the area of ​​pure grazing in the north. It attracts transhumant ranchers from the regions of Agadez , Tahoua and Zinder and from northern Nigeria . There are three cattle markets, including one in the main town of Bermo, which compete with the Sakkabal market in the neighboring community of Roumbou I. In addition to cattle breeding and trade, the handicrafts carried out by the Fulbe and Tuareg are of economic importance. Among other things, jewelry, camel saddles, swords and knives are produced, which are mainly sold in the departmental capital Dakoro . There is a local radio communautaire in Bermo .
