Dakoro is in the Sahel . The average annual rainfall is 300 mm. The neighboring communities are Azagor in the north and Birni Lallé in the east, south and west. The municipality is divided into 14 districts, 38 administrative villages, 18 traditional villages, 18 hamlets, twelve camps and five water points. The 14 districts are called Albadji 1, Albadji 2, Balaka, Dan Bako Allassane, Hachimou Chipkaou, Kourmi, Magagin Gari, Quartier Administratif, Rouboukawa, Sabon Gari Mahaman, Takal Mawa, Tsaouna, Zongon Magougou and Zongon Sallah. North of the city center is the way to Nigeria extending Tarka valley . The previously more diverse flora on the sandy soils of Dakoro is - due to recurring droughts and human settlement - essentially only characterized by acacias and balanites .

history

Dakoro was founded in the 1890s by Hausa , who came from what is now the Agadez and Tahoua regions . In the village of Maïlafia, which belongs to Dakoro, the French administration at the time set up a school especially for the nomadic population in 1947 . The school was one of the first of its kind in Niger. In 1960, the year Niger gained independence from France, Dakoro became the capital of the Dakoro district, from which the Dakoro district emerged in 1964 and the Dakoro department in 1998. In the 1960s, the Dakoro market was an important transshipment point for peanuts , Niger's most important export at the time. In 2002, as part of a state-wide administrative reform, the municipality was enlarged to include parts of the canton of Birni Lallé.

population

At the 1977 census, Dakoro had 10,688 inhabitants, at the 1988 census 14,577 inhabitants and at the 2001 census 18,875 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, after the municipal area expanded, the population was 71,201. The majority of the population are made up of various Hausa sub-groups, as well as Tuareg and Fulbe minorities .

Economy and Infrastructure

The economic cornerstones of the city are agriculture and trade. The cultivation of millet, sorghum and cowpeas is seriously endangered by the lack of rainfall. Sometimes there are conflicts between arable farmers and ranchers over the few arable land. There is an important cattle market in the city center. The trade connections extend to Libya and - via Diffa , Gouré and Maradi  - to Nigeria . Weekly markets that are important for the food trade are held on Sundays in the administrative village of Gougou and on Mondays in the administrative village of Intouila. With a center for handicrafts opened in 1998, leatherworking, blacksmithing and similar activities are also important to the city's economy. Dakoro is the seat of a Tribunal d'Instance, one of the 30 civil courts nationwide , which are below the ten civil courts of the first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance). The city is on National Road 30 , which leads from here to Chadakori in the Guidan Roumdji department , where it meets National Road 1 .
