Azagor is a rural municipality in the department of Dakoro in Niger .

geography

Azagor is located in part of the Tarka Valley in the Sahel region . The neighboring municipalities are Bermo in the north, Roumbou I in the east, Birni Lallé in the southeast and west and the city of Dakoro in the southwest. The municipality is divided into four administrative villages, four traditional villages, four hamlets and nine water points. The main town of the rural parish is the village of Azagor.

history

In the school year 1947/1948, the then French administration set up a nomad school in Azagor. The rural community of Azagor was created as an administrative unit in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from part of the canton of Birni Lallé.

population

At the 2001 census, Azagor had 3,635 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 5,565. Azagor is the capital of the Tuareg subgroup Kel Gress. In addition to the Tuareg, Hausa and Fulbe live in the community.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in a zone where agropastoralism is practiced. The poor climatic conditions make agricultural activities difficult. There is no market in the municipality, which is a disadvantage for economic development. As part of the 1995 peace agreement between the Tuareg and the central government in Niamey , infrastructure facilities such as a school, a health center, a granary and a cattle vaccination station were created in the main town.
